Brickwork on the outside, digital on the inside. Zollhof in Nuremberg has been an ecosystem for digital startups and established companies since 2017. Startups set up by students also benefit. The digital startup centre in Nuremberg is part of the ‘Gründerland Bayern’ initiative of the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy.

The coronavirus pandemic created an entirely new set of challenges for university-level teaching. It required teaching staff to convert their lectures and seminars into digital form within a very short space of time and inform students of new procedures. A special study carried out by the Centre for Higher Education (CHE) shows that FAU overcame these challenges with great success.

The winter term starts Monday, November 2, 2020, with a big digital welcome for all students. At the following virtual WiSo-info-fair, many of the service facilities, institutions, initiatives, and business partners will present themselves. Virtual campus tours, alumni greetings, and a digital party organized by student initiatives bring the day to an good end.

A large part of the winter semester 2020/21 will be taught online. Although some face-to-face teaching will still take place, the upcoming semester will be a hybrid semester. A hybrid semester means that face-to-face teaching is offered to supplement online teaching. We will ensure that all degree programs can still be studied.

The 2020 Shanghai Ranking has been published, and FAU is among the world’s top 100 universities in five subjects. FAU now has three subjects that are recognised among the top 50 in the world. The Shanghai Ranking has been published on an annual basis by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University since 2003.

Dr. Harry van der Weijde receives prestigious Humboldt Fellowship for experienced researchers from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. The scholarship enables Dr. van der Weijde, University of Edinburgh, to spend a research stay at WiSo, where he will work on the analysis of risks in consumer-oriented energy markets.

Prospective international students at FAU do not need to attend in person in order to apply and enrol. With a few exceptions, the application must be submitted via the online portal ‘campo’. FAU hopes that this is a pragmatic and uncomplicated solution for prospective international students in spite of the challenges caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

To support the political discussion about further developing energy reform and sustainable economic development during the coronavirus pandemic, the Expert Commission for the Monitoring Process ‘Energy of the Future’ has made a statement. FAUWiSo is represented in the Commission by Prof. Dr. Veronika Grimm, Chair of Economic Theory.

The module handbooks changed due to the virtual summer semester are published today on the WiSo website. FAU has published a statute regarding deviations from study regulations, examinations, doctoral and habilitation study regulations due to the Corona virus SARS-CoV-2.
