The new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) and the infection it causes (coronavirus induced disease, COVID 19) are continuing to spread. In response to the changing situation, FAU has updated its regulations concerning business travel to high-risk areas, the procedure for people returning from high-risk areas, and holding lectures, seminars and other events.

The FAU Wunschkonzert where staff and students decide who gets to play will return to the stage in spring 2020, on Friday 24 April 2020 at E-Werk in Erlangen. Two student bands, two headline acts and a party to remember – exclusively for students and staff at FAU. Videos of the bands are available online on the Wunschkonzert website.

At the beginning of the year, the Association for Information Systems (AIS) published its new research ranking of international business information systems. Prof. Dr. Sven Laumer, holder of the Schöller Endowed Chair for Information Systems, is ranked 39th in this ranking for publications in the AIS Senior Basket of Eight in the last five years.

FAU publishes three magazines – ‘friedrich’ is the magazine all about research, ‘alexander’ is the University magazine and ‘frisch!’ is aimed at new students. Copies of each magazine are available at various locations around the University. Or you can even request ‘friedrich’ or ‘alexander’ to be delivered to your home address or to your workplace.

All students have to re-register for the coming summer semester between 3 and 10 February 2020. All you need to do is go to mein campus and print off the bank transfer form available under ‘Studienkanzlei aktuell’ or pay the semester fee online (118 euros for summer semester 2020). All current dates for re-registering are availabe at the FAU website.

A new call for applications for the young researchers’ programme Emerging Talents Initiative (ETI) has just started – the deadline is 8 March 2020. The programme offers excellent young FAU researchers support to apply to an external funding provider within the funding period (12 months), for example the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG).

The 21st century poses considerable challenges to mankind, and science has a major role to play in mastering them. Researchers at FAU also have a valuable contribution to make. The University has now launched two Maps focussing on its expertise in two areas which are particularly important for society: the AI Map and the Energy and Climate Map.

FAU has secured its place as leading innovator in Germany and climbed up to 14th place among the world’s most innovative universities. FAU has achieved the top position in Germany for the fifth time running along with its third consecutive position in the top 5 in Europe and the first time for the University in the world’s top 15.

At this year's INREC in Essen, the paper "Uncertain bidding zone configurations: the role of expectations for transmission and generation capacity expansion" by Mirjam Ambrosius, Dr. Jonas Egerer, Prof. Dr. Veronika Grimm and Dr. Harry van der Weijde from University of Edinburgh received the GEE Best Paper Award.
